BOSTON, MA - Junior midfielder Aileen Maloney (Trumbull, CT) tallied a goal and dished out an assist to senior forward Autumn Sorice (Bethel, CT) - who netted the game-winner - as the Western Connecticut State University women's soccer team edged the Wentworth Institute of Technology, 2-1, Monday night at Sweeney Field. With the win, the Colonials remained unbeaten, improving to 9-0 overall, while the Leopards fell to 3-5-1.
"I'm proud of the way our team battled tonight," said WestConn head coach Alex Harrison. "After Wentworth scored to tie the game, we held our composure and were able to apply pressure and finish the game," he added.
After a scoreless first half, WestConn drew first blood when Maloney fired a shot that deflected off a defender and into the back of the net in the 62nd minute of play. Shortly thereafter, the hosts responded when senior forward Ali Leach (Stowe, VT) took a pass from senior Heather MacDougall (Exeter, MH) and booted a shot just inside the right post, deadlocking the score at 1-1.
The visitors retaliated in the 84th minute when Maloney slipped a pass up the middle of the field to Sorice who then dribbled in and blasted a shot into the left side of the twine for her team-leading seventh goal of the season. The Colonials would hold on the rest of the way as Wentworth would not register another shot.
The box score was nearly identical as each team finished with 20 shots and six corner kicks. Colonial senior goalkeeper Jillian Fernandez (Columbia, CT) improved to 8-0 and recorded seven saves, while Leopard junior netminder Micaela Robinson (Goshen, NY) dropped to 0-2, while turning aside five shots.
WestConn returns to action for yet another non-conference matchup when they travel to Worcester State on Wednesday at 7 p.m.
