TROY, NY - Senior midfielder Andrea DeVoe (Farmington, CT) and junior forward Allison Oakley (Beekman, NY) tallied goals in the Western Connecticut State University women's soccer season opening 2-0 win at RPI. The Colonials played the second of two games on Friday in the Engineers Cup at Renwyck Field.
DeVoe scored an unassisted goal in the 36th minute to put the Colonials up 1-0. It was one of only two shots she attempted on the afternoon.
Two minutes into the second half, Oakley put away her first marker of the season. Senior forward Autumn Sorice (Bethel, CT) set up Oakley for the insurance goal.
"I am very happy with the result this afternoon," stated second-year head coach Alex Harrison. "We were balanced on offense and defensively, we did not allow too many quality shots.
Junior Jillian Fernandez (Columbia, CT) earned the shut out in net for the Colonials. She made five saves on the day.
Tori Riopelle was peppered with four shots and made eight saves for the Engineers.
RPI was able to get 19 shots off, 13 of them in the second stanza, on Friday, but just five of them ventured toward the goal.
The Colonials face Buffalo State College in the second round on Saturday morning. Action from the center circle begins at 11 am.
