DANBURY, CT – WestConn junior midfielder Lauren Bradshaw (Bethel, CT) netted four goals and dished out a pair of assists en route to earning her 100th career point as the Western Connecticut State University women's lacrosse team fell to visiting non-conference foe Coast Guard Academy on Wednesday night at The Westside Athletic Complex. With the loss, the Colonials dropped to 3-7 overall, while the Bears improved to 9-3.
Rookie attacker Caroline Galligan (Marshfield, MA) also notched four goals, while sophomore Brooke Baldelli (New Fairfield, CT) and junior Amber Andrews (New Milford, CT) each tallied a scoring strike for the hosts.
Senior attacker Daria McKenna (Mystic, CT) tallied a game-high eight goals and two assists to pace Coast Guard, while rookie Marietta Davis (Great Falls, VA) added five goals and classmate Haley McCue (Arnold, MD) chipped in with four and a helper.
The Colonials led 3-2 in the early going. However, the Bears put together an 8-2 run to seize a 10-5 halftime advantage. The visitors would start the second stanza with another impressive outburst, a 10-3 spurt, extending the lead to 20-9 with just under five minutes remaining before McKenna rounded the scoring out with an unassisted even strength goal.
Coast Guard outshot the Colonials, 47-28, while also holding an edge in groundballs, 22-14. WestConn rookie goalie Jennifer Sawicki (Westbury, NY) went to 3-7 overall and finished with 12 saves, while Coast Guard rookie Mary Budri (Falmouth, ME) improved to 2-1, recording three first half saves before classmate Rebecca Dolan (Wilmington, DE) came on in relief in the second to stop five shots.
WestConn returns to action at LEC rival Southern Maine on Saturday at 11 a.m.
