ENGLEWOOD, FL - Western Connecticut State University freshman Caroline Galligan (Marshfield, MA) scored a team-high four goals, but the Fitchburg State University women's lacrosse team prevailed, 15-11, in the opener of a three-game southern swing in sunny Florida on Sunday night.
Sophomore Brooke Baldelli (New Fairfield, CT) contributed three goals while Kelly Lourenco (New Milford, CT) and Lauren Bradshaw (Bethel, CT) each chipped in a pair of goals for the Colonials, now 1-1.
Leading the way for the Falcons was Carrie Long and Sarah Napalitano, which netted seven and five goals, respectively.
Long scored four of her goals during a game-opening 6-0 run for Fitchburg State, over the first 8:32.
A goal by Bradshaw with 10:19 remaining in the contest, drew the Colonials within three goals, 13-10, but a pair of insurance goals from Napolitano sealed the victory down the stretch.
Marguerite Belcher made two saves for the winners while Jennifer Sawicki (Westbury, NY) made eight stops for WestConn.
The Colonials take on Westfield State University on Monday morning. Face-off is slated for 10 am.
