Women’s Lacrosse Halts Three-Game Skid with Thrilling Win over Western New England, 16-15

DANBURY, CT – Junior midfielder Olivia Kosilla (Ellington, CT) scored the game-winner with 1:57 remaining in the contest as the Western Connecticut State University women's lacrosse team ended a three-game losing skid, edging visiting non-conference foe Western New England University, 16-15, on Thursday night at The Westside Athletic Complex. Senior midfielder Destinee Carey (New Milford, CT) paced the Colonials with game-highs of six goals and three assists, while Kosilla finished with four goals and two helpers.

WestConn outshot the Golden Bears, 31-26, while dominating the draw controls as Kosilla won 26-of-33. Senior netminder Missy O'Donnell (Bridgeport, CT) was stellar in goal, turning aside multiple point blank shots en route to a six-save performance, while improving to 4-6 overall for the Colonials. Junior goalie Shannon McFadden (West Islip, NY) recorded 10 for WNEU and dropped to 3-8.

"Tonight was much needed and not only needed, but much deserved. We finally played WestConn Lacrosse, calm and composed. We focused on winning the draw and Kosilla was an essential component to that task. Everyone was key to the game, but it was great to see our attackers step up and finish. We are ready for the next one," said WestConn head coach Jenn Thomas after the win.

The visitors began the game with a 4-0 run. Junior attacker Julia Winer (Longmeadow, MA) started the spurt less than five minutes in. Shortly thereafter, she netted yet another to goal to cap the run. The Colonials would retaliate with a run of their own, cutting the lead to 4-1 when senior midfielder Meaghan Gustafson (Newington, CT) collected her seventh goal of the season, then seizing a 5-4 advantage when Carey notched her third goal with 11:34 left before the break.

WestConn widened the gap to 10-7 less than five minutes into the second half when sophomore midfielder Lauren Bradshaw (Bethel, CT) tickled the twine off a nifty pass from Carey. However, the Golden Bears awoke and responded to regain a 14-12 lead with 8:39 to play.

The Colonials struck back to take the lead back, pulling ahead 15-14 when rookie attacker Brooke Baldelli (New Fairfield, CT) scored on a free position shot with 4:47 left. Winer then tallied her fourth goal of the game to even the score at 15-15. On the ensuing play, rookie attacker Geovanna Badaro (Fairfield, CT) came out of a lengthy battle with the groundball allowing Kosilla to notch the game-winning goal just moments later.

With the victory, the Colonials improved to 5-6 overall, while the Golden Bears fell to 5-9. WestConn returns to action at Little East Conference rival Plymouth State on Saturday at Noon.
