NEW LONDON, CT – Rookie attacker Brooke Baldelli (New Fairfield, CT) netted a game-high five goals, while junior midfielder Olivia Kosilla (Ellington, CT) added a hat trick while dishing out two assists to lead the Western Connecticut women's lacrosse team to a 12-6 victory at non-conference opponent Coast Guard on Saturday afternoon at Cadet Memorial Field.
Senior midfielder Destinee Carey (New Milford, CT) chipped in with three goals and an assist, while scooping up a game-high six groundballs for the Colonials. Classmate goalkeeper Missy O'Donnell (Bridgeport, CT) was stellar in net, finishing with five saves and improving to 3-3 overall, while Coast Guard netminder Hannah Delguercio recorded four and fell to 2-6. WestConn outshot the hosts, 20-14, and also held a decisive edge in groundballs, 22-13.
The Colonials jumped out to an early 2-0 lead when Carey scored on a free position shot before finding the twine unassisted less than seven minutes later. Coast Guard answered when Abigail Branford scored unassisted, making the score 2-1. WestConn then reeled off a six-goal spurt. Baldelli took a nifty pass from Kosilla and scored to stretch the lead to 6-1 at the break. Kosilla then tallied to start the second half before Baldelli accepted a feed from sophomore midfielder Lauren Bradshaw (Bethel, CT) to cap the barrage and extend the advantage to 8-1 with 20 minutes remaining.
The hosts would trim the deficit to 9-3 when Daria McKenna scored on a free position shot. The Colonials would then add to the lead when Baldelli earned her 19th goal of the season before Niki Kirchner-Hope answered for Coast Guard with 2:33 left, rounding the scoring out at 12-6.
"We knew exactly what we needed to work on from the previous game this week. The last two practices, we focused on exactly what was necessary to be successful today. We are looking forward to our matchup with Worcester State," said Colonials head coach Jennifer Thomas following the win.
With the win, WestConn improved to 4-3 overall, while Coast Guard dropped to 2-6. The Colonials return to action for yet another non-league tilt when they travel to Worcester State (0-3 overall) on Tuesday at 7 p.m. The contest was originally slated for March 4 but was postponed due to inclement weather.
