DANBURY, CT - Junior guard Jancy Sherwood (Poughquag, N.Y.) scored a game-high 25 points as the Western Connecticut State University women's basketball team defeated the Newbury College, 118-68, on Friday evening in the opening game of the WestConn Hat City Tournament at Feldman Arena. Maine Maritime edged Trinity College, 56-55 in the nightcap.
The Mariners, now 5-3 will take on the Colonials in the championship game on Saturday at 4 pm. The Bantams (7-2) will face the Nighthawks (5-5) in the consolation game at 2 pm at the O'Neill Center.
Colonials sophomore Genesis Torres (Stratford, CT) added 15 points, one of six Western Connecticut to score at least 12 points. She also grabbed nine rebounds, handed out seven assists and made seven steals on the night.
Sophomore Jessica Davis (Hamden, CT) recorded her second double-double of the season with 12 points and 10 rebounds.
Nighthawks senior Destiny Spears (Arnold, Md.) and junior Taylor Kelley (North Billerica, Mass.) both scored 15 points. Spears also added 10 rebounds for her eighth double-double of the season. Freshman Jaymesha Sanders (West Haven, CT) scored 12 points in 24 minutes.
The Colonials were out of the gates quickly, starting the game on a 15-2 run in the opening three minutes. Sophomore Gabriella Hurlbert (Thomaston, CT) scored six points in the run. The Colonials led by at least 10 for the remainder of the quarter that saw them lead 30-12 after one.
The Nighthawks scored the first seven points of the second to pull within 11 at 30-19, however, the Colonials outscored the Nighthawks 33-13 from that point forward to lead 63-32 at the half. Torres had 12 of her 15 points after 20 minutes.
The Colonials came out of the locker room scoring eight points in the first minute to extend the lead further. Sherwood scored 16 of her points in the second half as the Colonials came out victorious by 50 over the Nighthawks. With her 25 points, Sherwood moves to fifth in the NCAA Division III in scoring average with 23.7 PPG.
WestConn moves to 6-4 on the season.
In the nightcap, Alayne Felix (Mahopac, NY) led all scorers with 21 points and grabbed a Mariners' high eight caroms. She also had five blocks against the Bantams.
Caitlin Kane (Wilton, ME) and Chloe Smedley (York, ME) added 13 and 11 points, respectively for the winners.
Erin Cunningham (Wilton, CT) led a trio of Trinity players in double figures. She canned 4 points and grabbed a game-high 11 rebounds.
Courtney Erickson (Everett, MA) and Erica Junquet (Monroe, NJ) chipped in 11 and 10 points, respectively for the Bantams.
Trinity led by as many as 12 points, 31-19 following a three pointer from Cunningham with 3:49 remaining in the second quarter.
With 1:12 left in the third quarter, the Bantams still held an 11-point advantage, 47-36 after another three from Cunningham, but the Mariners began their comeback.
MMA outscored Trinity, 15-8 in the final stanza and took its first lead of the game following a lay in by Felix with 2:12 remaining.
After a trio of time outs called between the two clubs, Junquet drilled a three pointer from the left side at the buzzer but could not convince the officials for an attempt to tie the game at the line.
