CLERMONT, FL - The WestConn softball team improved to 8-6 overall following a pair of wins to wrap up its spring trip on Thursday. The Colonials downed North Park in Game One, 9-3, before edging Smith, 6-4, in the finale. Rookie outfielder Natalia Hart (Milford, CT) went 2-for-3 with a trio of RBI's in the opener, while classmate catcher Kam Geysen (East Hampton, CT) smacked three doubles with an RBI in Game Two.
"Today the team finally played to the level we had been expecting all week. Hart had a break out day at the plate that we knew she was capable of and it was right on time. Alex Lafemina was tremendous at leading this team of 30 all week on and off the field, the growth from day one to today was very evident. The coaching staff is also very impressed with the leadership of Kelsey Fuchs and her performance in the J.V. game and ability to manage our pitching staff. The week went quickly and we look forward to returning to action up north, if mother nature will allow," said WestConn head coach Heather Stone following the victories.
The Colonials pierced the scoring column with six runs in the third inning. Junior outfielder Jenna Gaudioso (East Haven, CT) ignited the flurry with an RBI sacrifice fly. Moments later, rookie Charline Plasczynski (Bristol, CT) drilled a three-run homer. Then, freshman Kaley Langlois (Watertown, CT) capped the outburst with an RBI single, scoring junior Kayla Nowak (North Branford, CT).
North Park answered with a run in the top of the fourth before WestConn struck back with three more in the bottom of the frame. Freshman Jenna Houlahan (Yorktown Heights, NY) smacked an RBI single before Hart bashed a home run, giving the Colonials a 9-1 lead. North Park added a pair in the fifth to round out the scoring.
Sophomore pitcher Jaclyn Smith (Sandwich, MA) and Langlois combined to yield just one earned run, while scattering just five hits to lead WestConn to the win.
WestConn broke the ice in the top of the third when Hart ripped a double to left field, scoring Gaudioso. Plasczynski followed up with a double of her own to send Hart across the plate, giving the Colonials to a 2-0 advantage.
Smith would rally to knot the count at 3-3 in the bottom of the fifth. However, WestConn retaliated to regain the lead with a pair in the sixth before adding an insurance run in the seventh when Geysen roped an RBI double, extending the lead to 6-3. Smith scored a run on an error to conclude the tally at 6-4.
WestConn rookie pitcher Sara Tenke (Glen Cove, NY) was stellar on the mound, improving to 3-2 overall, while striking out seven, and surrendering just a pair of runs in a complete game outing.
The Colonials return to action in their home opener, a doubleheader against non-conference foe New England College on Sunday, March 26 at Noon.
