DANBURY, CT - Freshman forward Afa Reyes (Bridgeport, CT) scored his first collegiate goal and the Western Connecticut State University men's soccer team went on to defeat visiting John Jay College, 3-0 at the Westside Athletic Complex on Thursday afternoon.
The Colonials, now 9-6, raced out to a 1-0 lead when Reyes finished off a combination pass from Robert Della Penna (Suffield, CT) and Shane Bierfeldt (Torrington, CT) in the 19th minute of play. Della Penna initiated what proved to be the game-winning goal with one of his game-high six corner kicks.
Prior to intermission junior forward Chauncey Allers (Wilton, CT) scored a pair of goals, his team-leading ninth and 10th markers of the season. Allers first tally came following an 80-yard pass from freshman keeper Daniel Szabo (Trumbull, CT). Matthew Restrepo (Bridgeport, CT) assisted on the game's final goal with just 25:13 elapsed in the first half.
"We were able to play a lot of people today and that was a relief with this busy stretch of game," acknowledged WestConn's legendary head coach Joe Mingachos. "I am happy with today's result, but we really need to turn it up a notch in the rest of our conference matches, if we want to play in the Little East Conference Tournament."
Szabo made a pair of saves before giving way to Matthew D'Onofrio (Orange, CT). D'Onofrio made one stop in nearly 10 minutes of action.
WestConn outshot the Bloodhound, now 6-6 on the season, 19-8.
Steven Towler (Port Jefferson Station, NY) made nine saves for John Jay College.
The Colonials, winners of six of their last eight games, play host to Rhode Island College this Sunday, October 15. Game time is set for 1 pm.
