DANBURY, CT – After suffering four single goal losses earlier this season, the Western Connecticut State University men's soccer team found itself on the winning end on Wednesday night as they blanked visiting non-league foe Purchase College, 1-0, at The Westside Athletic Complex. Colonial senior midfielder Nick Kyriakidis (Sleepy Hallow, NJ) tallied the game-winning goal when he dribbled right to elude a defender and blasted a shot from the left wing into the top-right corner of the net in the 65th minute of play.
"Wish we could have converted on some of our other high quality scoring chances but I'm happy we earned the close win," stated WestConn head coach Joe Mingachos following the action.
The Colonials outshot the Panthers by a whopping 28-6 margin, while corner kick opportunities were knotted up at 3-3. Junior goalkeeper Luca DiCarlo (Waterbury, CT) improved to 4-2 overall while notching three saves for the Colonials, while rookie netminder Jordan Meade (Olivebridge, NY) finished with 10 saves for Purchase.
After a scoreless opening half, the paced picked up in the second. WestConn had its first quality effort in the 43rd minute when junior forward Chauncey Allers (Wilton, CT) fired a sharp-angled shot that was turned aside by Meade. Moments later, Allers just missed a header off a corner kick. However, Kyriakidis was able to provide the spark when he ripped his second goal of the year into the twine. The visitors had a prospect in the waning minutes but their header on a corner kick sailed above the crossbar.
WestConn improved to 4-4 overall, while the Panthers dropped to 2-3. The Colonials return to action when they host Little East Conference foe UMass-Dartmouth on Saturday at 3 p.m.
