KEENE, NH – Junior forward Chauncey Allers (Wilton, CT) notched his team-leading fourth goal of the season as the Western Connecticut State University men's soccer team was outlasted at Little East Conference nemesis Keene State, 2-1, on Saturday afternoon. With the loss, the Colonials fell to 3-4 overall and 1-1 in league play, while the Owls improved to 4-1-2 and 2-0.
"We had some chances near the end of the game. Unfortunately, we weren't able to come up with the equalizer," said WestConn head coach Joe Mingachos following the loss.
The Colonials broke the ice just three minutes into the game when senior Nick Kyriakidis (Sleepy Hollow, NJ) found Allers for a breakaway goal. Keene State would knot the count at 1-1 when Promise Kpee took a feed from Riley Steele and chipped the ball past the outstretched arms of Colonial junior goalkeeper Luca DiCarlo (Waterbury, CT) in the 9th minute of play. Steele connected with Kpee yet again shortly before halftime, extending the Owls' advantage to 2-1.
WestConn had some chances to answer in the second half. In the final two minutes of play, Keene State netminder Jason Smith came up with a big save before the Colonials sailed a header off a corner kick wide with 42 seconds left.
WestConn will seek to rebound when they return to action against visiting non-conference opponent Purchase on Wednesday at 7 p.m.
