NORTH ADAMS, MA- Union College's Ethan Strauss connected on the game's lone goal in the 57th minute to lift the Dutchmen to a 1-0 victory over the Western Connecticut State University men's soccer team in the championship game of the 2017 CIAO Soccer Classic hosted by Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts.
With the win, Union stays unbeaten at 5-0 while the Colonials drop to 2-2.
After a scoreless first half in which WestConn outshot Union 7-2, it were the Dutchmen that finally broke through.
Union's Jeremy Conn sent a cross that went through the Colonials defense and somehow found teammate Strauss. He would curl a shot past WestConn keeper Daniel Szabo (Trumbull, CT) making it 1-0. The goal was Strauss' first of the season.
"Despite the outcome, we played a solid game today and had many chance, but just couldn't put the ball away," said WestConn head coach Joe Mingachos.
WestConn continued to outshoot Union, however they couldn't get a ball past John Weitzman.
The Colonials had their best chance in the 84th minute. Colonial front runner Chauncey Allers (Wilton, CT) broke free on the right side of the box and ripped a shot from point blank range, however Weitzman dove and deflected the shot. The rebound went right to Nick Kyriakidis (Sleepy Hollow, NJ) and his shot hit the post keeping it 1-0.
For the game, the Colonials held a 16-5 shot advantage and a slim 5-4 mark in corners.
Weitzman collected seven saves to improve to 5-0 on the season.
Szabo notched two saves in a losing effort.
The Colonials travel to face Coast Guard on Tuesday, September 12. Game time is set for 6 pm in New London, CT.
