NORTH ADAMS, MA – Junior forward Chauncey Allers (Wilton, CT) netted a pair of goals to lead the WestConn men's soccer squad to a 2-1 victory over Lehman College at the 2017 CIAO Soccer Classic hosted by MCLA on Friday night. With the count deadlocked at 1-1, the Colonials forced a turnover and Allers booted a shot into the twine.
WestConn controlled the pace to begin the contest, outshooting the Lightning, 12-3 in the first half. The Colonials pierced the scoring column in the 19th minute when senior midfielder Nick Kyriakidis (Sleepy Hollow, NJ) lofted a ball from outside the box to a streaking Allers, who gathered the pass and chipped it into the top-left corner, good for a 1-0 lead.
Lehman answered in the 61st minute when Eduardo Victorio (Yonkers, NY) snagged a loose ball in the box and ripped a shot into the back of the net, knotting the count at 1-1. Shortly thereafter, Allers converted and the Lightning missed on a free kick attempt late in the game.
Junior goalkeeper Luca DiCarlo (Waterbury, CT) turned aside a shot for the Colonials, while Lehman netminder Chris Mulholland (Mahopac, NY) recorded 13. With the win, WestConn improved to 2-1 overall while Lehman dropped to 1-2.
"We did a great job applying pressure tonight. Our defense was solid when it needed to be and hopefully we can carry this momentum forward," said Colonials head coach Joe Mingachos following the win.
WestConn returns to action Saturday at Noon when they meet Union on Day Two of the tournament.
