POUGHKEEPSIE, NY - The Western Connecticut State University men's soccer team fell at Vassar College, 4-0, at Gordon Field on Friday afternoon, in the season opener for both teams.
WestConn, 0-1, out shot the Brewers, 7-5, but the WestConn 11 could not place one between the pipes. All of Vassar's four shots on goal found the back of the net.
Vassar got on the scoreboard early when Hayden Van Brewer tallied his first goal of the season at the 3:21 mark. He was assisted by Mattie Mrlik.
The Brewers went ahead 2-0 when Mrlik and Van Brewer swapped ends of the play in the 35th minutes.
With just two seconds remaining in the first half, Henrik Olsson finished off a sharp pass from Kevin Baliat and sent his team into intermission with a 3-0 bulge.
"We were outmatched today, that was obvious," stated WestConn head coach Joseph Mingachos. "Vassar is a quality club and that last goal as time ran out in the first half really took any wind we had out of our sails. We'll get right back at it and wipe this one out of our memories."
Jose Novas closed out the scoring for the winners with a goal in the 74th minute.
Lucas DiCarlo (Waterbury, CT) suffered the loss for WestConn after he allowed three goals in the first half. Daniel Szabo (Trumbull, CT) allowed the late goal in his 45 minutes of action.
WestConn travels to St. Joseph's University of Long Island on Tuesday, September 5. Game time is set for 7 pm.
