Rashard Rodriguez Drains Game-High 17 Points as Men’s Basketball Breezes Past Southern Maine in LEC Opener, 67-47

DANBURY, CT – Junior forward Rashard Rodriguez (Trumbull, CT) notched a game-high 17 points, while classmates Tyler Rowe (East Hartford, CT) and Geary McLeod (Meriden, CT) chipped in with 13 and 12, respectively as the Western Connecticut State University men's basketball squad breezed to a 67-47 victory in the Little East Conference opener for both teams on Saturday afternoon at Feldman Arena.

With the win, the Colonials improved to 3-3 overall and 1-0 in league play, while the Huskies dropped to 1-6 and 0-1. The hosts held the visitors to just 16-for-53 (30.2%) shooting from the field, while holding a 50-31 edge in the rebound column. WestConn junior Eli Rodriguez (Bristol, CT) pulled down a game-high 10 off the glass.

Rookie guard DJ Anderson (Houston, TX) paced Southern Maine with 15 points, while senior guard Christian McCue (Hampden, ME) added nine.

"Despite our offensive struggles tonight, we managed to hit a few more shots than them," said WestConn head coach Jason Harlow after the victory. "We hang our hat on our defense. We're not big but we are athletic. It was nice to get our first conference win today," he continued.

It was all Colonials from wire-to-wire as they led the entire contest. They began the game with an 8-0 spurt finished off with a three-pointer from Rashard Rodriguez. The lead stretched to 13 when sophomore guard Evan Curtin (Portland, CT) knocked down a shot from beyond the arc shortly before the hosts entered halftime with a 31-19 advantage.

The second half was highlighted by a rim rattling alley-oop dunk from sophomore forward Fenton Bradley Jr. (Mansfield, CT) off a pretty lob from Rowe near the top of the key. Moments later, Rowe drilled a trifecta to put WestConn ahead 52-30 with 9:32 remaining. The Huskies would pull to within 13 before the hosts concluded the game with a 13-6 run.
