DANBURY, CT – Rookie forward Carly Matasavage (Middlebury, CT) tallied a pair of goals to lead the Western Connecticut State University field hockey team to a 3-1 non-league victory over visiting Roger Williams Tuesday night at the Westside Athletic Complex. With the win, the Colonials improved to 5-13 overall, while the Hawks dropped to 3-14.
The contest got off to a frenetic pace as three goals were scored within the first seven minutes of play. The hosts broke the ice less than one minute in when Matasavage slapped a low right-handed shot past Roger Williams sophomore goalkeeper Mya Lunn (Marion, MA). The Hawks countered moments later when senior midfielder Stephanie Yaeger (Gansevoort, NY) netted her fourth goal of the season. Western retaliated to regain the lead one minute later when Matasavage struck for her team-leading seventh goal on the year, assisted by senior midfielder Brianna Reda (New Milford, CT). The ensuing action slowed down a bit as the Colonials maintained the 2-1 advantage at halftime.
It appeared the second half would start much like the first when Reda took a penalty corner and weaved through a pair of defenders to tally her fourth goal of the season less than two minutes into the stanza. However, that would end up being the final goal of the game as both netminders strung together some impressive saves the rest of the way. Senior Kristy Trotta (Danbury, CT) improved to 5-13 and racked up 13 saves, while Lunn moved to 3-14 and finished with 11.
