Zach Piroh Belts Three Doubles As WestConn Tames Panthers

PURCHASE, NY - Sophomore designated hitter Zach Piroh (Stratford, CT) went 3-for-3 with three doubles and two runs batted in to lead the Western Connecticut State University baseball team to a convincing 9-1 victory over Purchase College on Wednesday afternoon.

Piroh had three of the Colonials 16 hits on the afternoon.  Three other WestConn starters registered three hits in the victory.  Brett Shaw (Southington, CT), Kyle MacLean (Southington, CT) and Matt Mancini (Waterbury, CT) each went 3-for-4 as the Panthers sent seven pitchers to the bump.

WestConn, now 9-10, was forced to play a home game at Purchase College and Wednesday was the fourth time, since returning from its Florida trip, that the Colonials were able to play a game.

"We had a chance to play a lot of guys today and were able to use the day as a tune-up for league play coming up on Friday," said 19-year WestConn head coach Johnny Susi.  "We have been outside only four times in nearly a month."

Kyle Cole (Southington, CT) earned the victory and is now 1-2 on the season.  He came on in relief of starter Andrew Fogerty (Mystic, CT) in the fifth inning.

Cole allowed just two hits while walking one over three innings.

Fogarty yielded the visitor's only run while giving up two hits.  He struck out three and walked four.

Freshman righty Mike Hendler (Purchase, NY) worked the final two innings and allowed three singles.

Dominic Micara (Massapequa, NY) suffered the loss and is now 0-4 on the season.  He allowed three runs on two hits while striking out one and walking three in an inning of work.

WestConn's pitching staff scattered seven singles on the day.

Matthew Mulligan (Bellport, NY) was the only Panther with multiple hits as he went 2-for-4 and scored Purchase's only run, which came in the top of the first frame.

The Colonials knotted the game at 1-1 in the bottom of the third inning.  Shaw doubled to lead off the inning, advanced to third base on a ground out then raced home following an errant throw from Panther first baseman Brian Cunningham (Westbury, NY).

WestConn exploded for three runs in the fifth and four more in the sixth inning and never looked back.

Purchase falls to 14-11 on the season.

The Colonials travel to the University of Southern Maine on Friday, April 13 for a Little East Conference doubleheader.  Due to forcasted rain in the Vacation State this weekend, the twinbill has been pushed up to Friday.  First pitch is scheduled for 12 noon in Gorham.
