Baseball Upends Wisconsin-Stout, Falls to Wooster

FT. MEYERS, FL - The WestConn baseball team moved to 5-5 overall following a doubleheader split on Friday. The Colonials upended Wisconsin-Stout, 20-3, in the opener before falling to Wooster, 12-5, in Game Two. Senior first baseman Frank Vartuli (Westport, CT) racked up five RBI's, while junior Clete LoRusso (New Milford, CT) drove in four to lead WestConn against Stout. Senior catcher Bryan Harper (Ledyard, CT) paced the Colonials with a 2-for-5 outing while stealing a base for the Colonials in the loss to undefeated Wooster (5-0).

"Our bats finally started to wake up. Many of our guys broke thru with good days at the plate," said WestConn head coach John Susi following the days action.

WestConn erupted for 14 runs thru five innings to begin play. Senior shortstop EJ Lavoie (East Granby, CT) highlighted the five-run second inning when he drilled a double, scoring two runs, giving the Colonials a 5-0 lead. Vartuli drove in a pair with a single before junior catcher Zach Sagar (Trumbull, CT) notched two RBI's with a double in the fourth, widening the gap to 11-1. Vartuli then blasted a three-run homer in the fifth, extending the advantage to 14-1.

The Colonials continued the onslaught, racking up another six runs in the seventh. Sophomore designated hitter George Bielizna (Danbury, CT) ignited the barrage with an RBI single before LoRusso smacked a double with the bases loaded, sending all three runners across the plate to make it 20-1. Stout answered with two runs in the eighth to round the scoring out at 20-3.

Junior right-handed hurler Shane Bierfeldt (Torrington, CT) improved to 1-1 overall, while fanning nine batters and allowing just one earned run over seven innings for WestConn.

Wooster put up a six spot in the top of the third before the Colonials answered with a pair in the bottom half of the frame, cutting the deficit to 6-2. Junior Joe Daigle (Southington, CT) earned tough RBI after getting hit by a pitch. Moments later, Lavoie hit a towering sacrifice fly, scoring senior Tre' Gause (Brookfield, CT) – who reached on a bunt.

The game remained at 6-2 until the sixth when Wooster added another five runs. WestConn countered with a run in the bottom half when Gause bashed a sacrifice fly to left, sending home junior Kevin DeCastro (Bethpage, NY) – who singled through the right side earlier. The Colonials sliced the lead to 11-5 in the seventh. Daigle came around to score on a wild pitch before Vartuli grounded out, scoring Lavoie. Wooster added a run in the ninth to wrap the count up at 12-5.

Junior lefty Kyle Cole (Southington, CT) took the loss for WestConn, dropping to 0-2 overall, while Brian Murray collected the win for Wooster and moved to 1-0.

The Colonials return to action on Saturday against Carroll at 3 p.m., before meeting up with St. Joseph's at 6 p.m. They then finish out the Florida slate with a pair of games on Sunday and one on Monday.
