FORT MYERS, FL - The Western Connecticut State University baseball team split a doubleheader with Wisconsin Lutheran on Tuesday morning, dropping the early-morning opener, 7-5 before coming back to capture the daycap, 9-2 behind a stellar pitching performance from George Bielizna (Danbury, CT) in sunny Florida.
Bielizna went six innings and allowed two runs on five hits while striking out seven as the Colonials evened their record at 3-3.
While the sun made its way over the horizon, Wisconsin Lutheran came back from a 5-3 deficit to score a pair of runs in the fifth inning to even the contest at 5-5. An inning later, Lehman belted a two-run, game-winning triple off Matt Fasoli (Trumbull, CT).
Leading the Colonials in the opener was EJ Lavoie (East Granby, CT) who went 3-for-4 with two runs scored.
Junior Joel Luna (Queens Village, NY) went 2-for-3 with two runs batted in, with a single in the fourth inning.
Matt Fasoli (Trumbull, CT) (0-1) suffered the loss for WestConn after allowing a pair of runs in an inning and two-thirds of work.
The Colonials scattered 10 hits and scored six runs in the second inning to open up an 8-0 lead after 12 outs.
Frank Vartuli (Westport, CT) went 2-for-3 with two runs batted in, both in the first two frames, and scored a pair of runs.
EJ Lavoie (East Granby, CT) had a two-RBI single in the second inning. He later came around to score in the inning.
The Colonials have another early twinbill on Wednesday as they take on Illinois College in a double dip beginning at 9:00 am on Wednesday morning.
